I was searching for a designer to update my tired ranch, and wanted a more contemporary,... clean look. I found traditional designers didn't really listen to my needs or come up with innovative solutions and designs. Geri knew exactly what I wanted and had such a good sense of style, taste, and proportion, that I left almost every decision up to her; and the choices she made were 100% perfection! Our contractors have even taken pictures of our rooms to show their clients their innovative work; work based on her vision and designs! She sets the bar high in Charlotte, and whether you're searching for a traditional or modern designer, I'd never consider anyone else. I'm sure folks on Houzz will be seeing pictures shortly of our modern ranch transformation which is still in progress!read more

This is the second time we have hired Geri as our designer, and I’m already thinking of... other projects we want her hands on!! This project included our master bath (completely gutted and redesigned), and two new closets in our bedroom (so my husband could actually have a closet), and a remodel of our guest bathroom. Huge job. As with the last design a number of years ago, when Geri shows us her drawings (digitally), there is usually nothing we want to change or alter, which I find amazing. That’s how great she is. She hears what you need, then makes it better than you imagined. This was what I wrote a few years ago when we first hired Geri, and wanted it included in my review: We hired Geri to design a huge kitchen remodel for us. We had a couple of meetings where she covered various topics - our vision, our personalities, our hobbies, etc. With that, I then assumed we would then have to go through a number of her designs until we finally agreed on one. Her very FIRST design was perfect and personal and everything my husband and I wanted. Only minor minor tweaks were needed. During the actual remodeling, she has gone above and beyond her scope of ‘hired’ work to make sure the contractors are on task , that we are happy, and that the design concept stays true. She has made the process a wonderful experience, and I don’t think we could have asked for more in terms of her skill and design work.read more

It is my pleasure to write a recommendation for Geri and Freespace Design. I bought a... house built in 1932 but love true modern, edgy, sharp design - something not typical in a 1930s house. I went through four different designer "interviews" before meeting Geri. I was immediately impressed by her first response email - she made a point of outlining her philosophy, and emphasized the relationship and communication component (no-one else had done this). I first engaged Geri to design my kitchen. Because I wanted something completely different, I only gave her minimal guidance - a handful of magazines with marked photos, a few emails about what I like, etc. She came back with an INCREDIBLE, cutting-edge design that wildly exceeded my expectations. She accommodated many environmentally conscious components and creative materials. She also provided excellent guidance on budget trade-offs (e.g., where to spend money, where to save). I know she spent far more hours on this project than her fee - she was with us the whole way, checking in, helping explain things to contractors, etc. I've worked with Geri at least three times since - she created both external and internal designs for our house addition; helped me on a studio apartment in NYC; and most recently, re-vamped my living room. Geri is THE modern designer with whom to work in Charlotte, in my opinion - not a diluted contemporary style, or Southern modern, but true European sharp modern. My husband and I retained Geri to help us with several renovation projects, including a... complete update and redesign for our kitchen, a facelift for our fireplace/hearth area and a new makeover for our laundry room (including adding new cabinetry and new functionality as a mudroom). We also consulted with Geri on several other changes to our home, including a new staircase, lighting, new flooring in parts of our home and refinishing some of our current flooring. We love modern design, but unfortunately, it's hard to find modern design in the Charlotte area. After unsuccessfully searching for modern homes, we decided to keep our current space and modernize some of its traditional aspects. My husband and I really took our time in deciding whether to proceed with the renovations and with retaining Geri, only because we are busy people and can be indecisive; we also were debating our budget constraints. Throughout the process, from us just floating ideas with Geri, to retaining her and then reviewing the designs she presented, Geri was so accommodating. I never felt pushed or rushed to make any decisions and she was always willing to work around our schedule. This being our first experience on any renovations in our home, we are extremely happy with Geri's services and her ability to recognize our style. Based off of us sharing a limited number of pictures of modern design that attracted us, she was able to design something unique to our space. Whenever I had/have a question, I reach out to her via email or text and she responds very promptly, even though she may have competing priorities. She is also very practical, for example, she makes suggestions keeping in mind where money will be well spent in our home versus areas that may not be worth as much investment. Also, she has knowledge not just about design, but also craftsmanship. She can effectively communicate with the people performing the construction work. If we proceed with future renovations, we will go to Geri without a doubt. Highly recommended!read more
