Interior Design Consultant for The City of Shelby, NC. Architect: MBAJ Architecture.
An integral part of the current economic development plan for Cleveland County, North Carolina, the 5,000sq ft airport terminal building was officially opened in September 2010. As the main gateway to the City of Shelby for a number of corporations currently located in the area and for those looking for potential business locations, it was important to create the right first impression for both corporate executives and pilots by providing a comfortable, well equipped modern facility, as well as an exciting space to serve members of the local community.
The design concept was referenced from aircraft imagery, form and materials. The main feature mono-spine, steel staircase alludes to the skeletal structure of an airplane fuselage, the reception desk to the engine cowling of a Boeing 747, and tail fin and wing forms appear in the custom casework. Lighting is suspended from aircraft cable and steel mesh undulating panels float above the conference table. Propeller blades and jet engines inform the floor design and create visual boundaries between public and private space. A bold, yet soothing color palette compliments the modern furnishings to create a sophisticated and functional contemporary interior.

The concept for the design of this industrial space was derived from a 7-degree angle off-axis shift discovered while studying the floor plan. This angle was then applied on differing planes throughout the interior for wall graphics, floor patterns and the proportions of the custom designed reception desk and floating reflector clouds over the studio space. Shades of red, gray and white reflect MBAJ Corporate colors. Click on image to enlarge.

In keeping with the architect’s concept the lobby interior was designed to reflect the local surroundings while paying homage to the textile industry. Abstract interpretation of flowing water informed the terrazzo floor, red earth and cool blue toned walls compliment the emphatic dark ceiling that alludes to the night sky. All work together to create an exciting and stimulating entrance to the sophisticated palette of the auditorium space. Freespace Design was also asked to create an art piece for the Lobby space. This has taken the form of a large 3-dimensional photography based installation reflecting the historical significance of the area and it’s place in contemporary society.
RETAIL: ROGER’S POOL & SPA:
shelby, nc……NOW OPEN! www.rogerspoolservice.com
Interior Designer/Project Manager/Construction: The client had three stipulations: to utilize recycled materials as far as possible, to make it a “fun” space, and to make people feel like they were not in Shelby! Clearly color was going to play an important part in the scheme, enhanced by the bamboo forest mural. The design concept was obvious, allusions to all things watery and the re-use of anything that had once been part of a pool. Hence the reception desk, built (by Freespace Design) from the galvanized steel corners as used in the construction of liner wall swimming pools. 3 sections provided the perfect “wave” form, left “as is” and bolted together emphasized the constructed aesthetic. Topped with a counter top of recycled glass mosaic tiles and an end panel from a salvaged retail wall display. The majority of retail display was from salvage and the cool water feature began life as a pool filter.
All graphic/logo designs, store signage supplied by Freespace. A fun project and a fun space! Click on images to enlarge.
